Thinking back, and bless his soul, Michael Jackson the undisputed king of pop was once again at the forefront of fashion and all things cool, with his public outings he would be gowned with a face mask. Although at the time it did not really take off and become a "trend" which is surprisingly really, as the moon walk was a hit and quickly became replicated worldwide by people of all races and cultures, along with the glove, but the face mask remained solely his own signature piece with little interest in it being simulated.
Maybe at the time a surgical mask was just that, you either wore it to perform surgery or slapped it on to cover and hide from the results of having a jack-hammer pound away at the cartilage of your nose in some sort of outsourced beautification process of facial renovation. Either way, at the time the face mask was not going mainstream just quite yet.
Unbelievably it has taken a virus known as H1 and not MJ to get people to realize that a statement can be made by wearing a face mask. Wielding the mask does make an intelligent statement and as opposed to the wacko days, the fad is only just now catching on. A face mask as part of your every day attire gives the illusion of intelligence by saying,, i keep up with current affairs and i am not stupid, i have an awareness of worldly things, and passes you off in a seductive and beckoning kind of way, and its fast catching on as a great add on for many people to be used along beside their current daily mating rituals.
The marketing potential is as of yet still an untapped source of high volume sales which will be going in the direction of some of the bigger fashion houses, the likes of which can be found in Milan. The cash cow associated with the swine flu will see Swarovski studded masks and masks done out in an array of designs to suit any lifestyle, from the likes of the Becks to you and me. It is also an advertisers dream piece of real estate, imagine your logo or their logo, even a Nike logo attached onto a face mask, and offering high performance masks that have been tuned and personalized for either track or field, in fact whether you run, jump, fight, push a barrow or ride a bike, there will be a big name sporting manufacturer looking after your needs.
Quite frankly, the face mask is and will be the condom of the new millennium and you should keep one or two in your wallet or handbag. The face mask fad is here to stay, and i will back that with my own personal go with my gut feeling guarantee. And even if you are not ready for your debut outing in a face mask due to the unavailability of the branded models yet to be released, at least get yourself protected and purchase a standard one, try it out in the comfort of your own home perhaps in front of the mirror or back shed or something like that.
