Thailands Gambling Opportunity.
Gambling is illegal in Thailand,the only form of gambling allowed is the state sponsored lottery.
With the Thai foreign currency low by western standards and annual income not set to make the average Thai worker rich,winning the lotto is hugely popular with a vast number of Thais participating in the lottery although the winning amount varies I have heard that 2 million Baht is possible,a win and this can set up the winning nicely.I have seen foreigners buying the lotto so I assume it is open to all.
The alternative for the Thai for gambling is Thai airways or Thai railways to Cambodia to visit the Casinos who love Thai visitors who turn their Thai currency into gold or a sad loss,great for the Cambodians but no good for the bank of Thailand,it is not something you would be likely to find in the Thailand yellow pages.
Having Casinos of their own would be great for the Thailand economy but no change is likely any time soon.
The lottery at least give the locals the feeling that the pot of gold is their next ticket away,a morale booster if not a win.

The winnings go something like this.
First Prize 1 number 2 million baht
Second prize 5 numbers 100000 baht
Third prize 10 numbers 40000 baht
Fourth prize 50 numbers 20000 baht
Fifth prize 100 numbers 10000 baht
Bonus prize* 2 numbers 50000 baht
Lottery draws are twice a month usually the 1st and 16th it is shown live on Thai television.
If you win a prize you need to go to the Thai government lottery office where you will receive a cheque if the lotto prize is less than 20000 baht you can cash in at a local agent.
The Thai lotto is easier to win than the American or European Lotto but the prizes are smaller.
