Thailand Bride continues..
Ok where were we!
In the first editorial on Thailand Brides we covered getting to your Thailand girl friends village and what to expect when you arrive at your Thai girls village and family lets assume everything has worked out wonderfully and our Find Love Asia couple have decided to get married what happens next you may wonder, the following cover story is a likely scenario.
you have now spent some time at your Thai girls village and family, the family and your personal girl has said yes to your marriage proposal the question soon to be discussed will be the Dowry which In Thailand a dowry is a sum of money paid to the bride's family at the time of the wedding this may seem out of place to the western man but is a accepted tradition in Thailand and others countries as well where financial security for your Thai Girl and her family is the base around which your love and relationship will revolve.
For A Thai Man who marries a Thai woman as would happen in a village; when a man marries a Thai girl he will generally move in with her family. He will run her family's farm and take care of her parents, grand parents, sisters, brothers and anyone else in anyway related to her family, the western man is unlikely to live this life so the Dowry for him will be higher than for a village Thai man.
what will you pay thats a tough one because it is not based on science or math it will be negotiated on how much the family think you can pay and how much the western man is prepared to pay a happy balance will need to be agreed on,it would be best if you had a Thai third party to help you negotiate if not it will likely be your bride to be who will set the pace.
The Dowry will depend on the Girls standing and beauty if she is well educated and from a successful family the Dowry will be high if the girl is from the village the taking into account Dowrys that have been paid before have ranged from a low of 25000 baht to 100,000 baht and higher once a agreeable sum is reached smile.
The Dowry will be paid at the wedding ceremony in Thai currency this money will be shown to the quests and the exact amount mentioned and counted in front of all and then the family will state their agreement when this is done the wedding will continue.
It has been known to happen before that some families will have the Bridegroom double the amount of the Dowry for the benefit of those from the village at the wedding and to use small Thai currency to draw out the time it takes to count it increasing their status among the village but then after the wedding quietly give the man back the extra amount.
The wedding is based on ceremony
It starts in the evening the day before the wedding with a Buddhist ceremony involving 9 monks.
The following day is the Doors ceremony a symbolic procession to the Brides door way(this one is interesting and worth a google to find out more).
next is the feet washing ceremony the groom stands on a stool as the Bride washes his feet a sign of respect and allegiance.
The White thread ceremony involves the village elders and wise men and basically the personal couple receiving sound advice for their future marriage they are joined by white thread soaked in holy water at the end of ceremony they will break the thread the one with the longest thread loves the most etc.
The shell ceremony and the main wedding event this is where the families get together similar to the western style wedding, smiles and gifts are exchanged and wedding photos taken.
the wedding is completed in the evening with a feast eating and drinking with the wedding couple doing the rounds thanking everyone for making their day and wedding a happy one etc
This is a quick run down on Thai marriage there will be variations no doubt but you get the rough idea if this is you I suggest google for more info and look for stories from those who have been there and done that.
I hope this is helpful for our Find Love Asia members this is what Dating Thailand singles is all about.
