Understand that it will be hot, it will be basic, and there will not be any beds. You'll be sleeping on a mat on the floor, eating local food with the family and there will be very few home comforts. In Isaan the local cuisine is different from any Thai food you may have tried. Although the locals love it you will likely find their food hot and spicy although I am sure they will take your western palate into account and soften the blow with less spicy food for you,your stomach will not be used to the natural bacteria here so Bangkok belly is a possibility and mosquitos are another problem you need to consider,it would be a good idea to visit a Bangkok doctor to find out if you need any injections or tablets for the area you are travelling too.
do not drink the water at the village or use the ice water,bottled water is most often available so stock up before you go.
Some things to bring with you are - toilet paper, bottled water, insect repellant (even a mosquito net), western cigarettes, western style beer and spirits, snack food (unless you like salted whole dried fish),light clothes, good shoes, coffee, tea, a cup and plenty of gifts for the family.
If its the first time to Thailand for you one surprise will be the toilets they are the squat variety with your left hand and a bucket of water if you have toilet paper only use a little bit if you block up their toilet you will not be popular,after the intial surprise though you will get the hang of it.
your shower will be a bucket of water thrown over yourself do not mix up the shower bucket with the toilet bucket.
Meeting The Family
You will be made very welcome and your arrival will be a big event for the village. Expect to meet everyone in the village in the first few hours this may be a little daunting if you are a shy person but it is going to happen so prepare for it.
There will be lots of smiling and laughing plus a good deal of prodding and poking. Most village Thais have had very little to do with farangs so expect them to be fascinated with your skin, hairy arms and colour of your eyes.They will wai you which is hands together and a bow the wai will vary depending on the Thais age and village standing have your Thai girlfriend give you a lesson on how the Wai works but you would be best to give a small nod a bow and a handshake.
Giving gifts is traditional but you do not have to spend a lot have your Thai singles girlfriend assist you in selecting gifts a packet of biscuits or lollies for the children will be fine.
It is cheap in the villages compared to the cities which is just as well because you will be paying for a lot of the food and drinks during your stay,pay with a smile.
their will not be the English spoken as in the the cities so a lot of smiles and handshakes will be the order of the day your Thai Bride to be will help you there I am sure.
strangers will drop in to see you they will study you,eat your food and smoke your cigarettes(if you do not smoke take some with you anyway they will love your western cigarettes).hide any irritation and be friendly.
Most of them will have small farms from rice to ducks including the Girls family you could try your hand at planting or helping out on the farm,a cultural experience for you and a good laugh for them.
Many Foreigners enjoy the village life others do not plan for 2-3 days and have a exit strategy if it gets to much for you you can gracefully head back to the modern world.
understand the culture of the village and you will not embarrass yourself,your bride to be and her family,firstly no public affection do not kiss her or touch her body in public if holding hands let her make the first move as she knows the rules.
behave yourself even if you have a few drinks losing your cool is a sign of bad character in Thailand and will not be appreciated or forgotten,remember if this lovely Thai girl is to be your bride you WILL be coming back to the village.
